CHARACTER TRAINING FOR SCOUT AND TRAININGSHIP BOYS BY MAJOR F.M. CRUM 1923
Major
F.M. Crum was a Boy Scout leader, and his camps in Scotland were famous for
strict discipline. So much so that one of the toughest reformatory Trainingships
in Scotland decided to let groups of thier boys stay, with instructors, at
several of Major Crum's camps.
Boys from the Reformatory Training Ship 'Empress', were mostly from Glasgow, or some of the Highland areas of Scotland, and they were used to corporal punishment on board the reformatory Ship. Major Crum wrote several booklets about his 'Charicter Training Camps".
Coming soon with part two of Dudly Pank

Part one : Birching on board a Boys Training Ship
HMS
Impregnable. Never before told, how they were fixed over the hammocks on this
and other Training Ships. We have only just recieved the final story of the
Jacobs ladder and the Hammocks. Where, when and how, a must for every serious
corporal-punishment researcher, new information never published before anywhere.
Also see the faces of the lads on board at the time, re-live the birchings as you hear the Master At Arms, the sea lapping on the side of the ship, and the swish of the birch.
Plus re-enactments of these punishments in video clips

Here
we look at Alex Devine, another great advocate of corporal-punishment. He
was the founder, and for more than thirty years, the Headmaster, of Clayesmore
School, and he has justly been described as one of the great eccentrics of
English education.
Starting off by taking boys from the Police Courts, and re-educating them with the birch, he decided to set up a private school taking boys who had, or were about to be, expelled from the Public Schools, and re-educating them at Clayesmore.
In other words Alex (known to his friends as Lex), was going to tackle the most difficult boys of his time.
