Information about our Movie Clips

Movie clips are big files because of all the information that needs to be stored. Our movie clips are getting longer and bigger and so download times are becoming longer too.

We have had a rethink about this and we now make two formats available:

Our usual high quality format. This uses MPEG1 encoding with a picture size of 384 x 288 pixels. You may find that you can zoom this up to 200% in your player (or even full-screen) and it will still look good. However, these are now very big files which makes downloading with a standard 56K modem a very slow process. We restrict these files to around 5MB. If the file is bigger than this, then we generally only make the Reduced size version available (see opposite column). If you don't mind waiting or if you have broadband or cable, then you will be getting the very best quality clips available on the web. These clips can be played using Windows Media Player and Real Media Player.

Reduced size format. We are now using Real Media encoding with a picture size of 320 x 240 pixels. The file sizes are much smaller and therefore quicker to download. But there is a trade-off in quality. You won't really be able to zoom them up to 200% as the quality won't be that good. But you may find that this format is OK for you. We make all our movie clips available in this format. These clips will not play on Windows media player, so you will have to use the Real media Player. There's more info in the FAQs on Movie clip players and where to get one for free.

Extracts. Sometimes we have a long clip with lots of pre-amble before the punishment. We know you like to see this but it sometimes makes the files very big. In these cases, we generally make the whole clip available in reduced size format and we extract the "highlights" from the clip and make it into a high quality format extract.
